When developing and delivering content orally or in a presentation, it is important to consider your audience.
- If you show it, say it. Describe images and charts that you display in your presentation. Avoid pointing at things and saying ‘this’ or ‘that’ without a full description.
- Be prepared to provide auditory information (instructions, discussion points, etc) in a written format if requested.
- Ensure all pre-recorded video and audio media is accurately captioned prior to providing material to the class and always use captions.
- When possible, provide accessible electronic format materials of your content ahead of time to your audience.
- To assist with lip reading and facial cues, face the class or audience when speaking and avoid obscuring your lips or face when possible.
- Use a lapel mic or microphone to amplify audio to the room when speaking.
- Repeat class/audience contributions or questions prior to response.
- Give adequate time for people to think and respond.
- Think ahead. If you are planning small group discussions or activities, think about potential accessibility challenges.
