A shared commitment to digital accessibility
App State is dedicated to creating an inclusive and accessible experience for everyone, both on campus and online. Beyond physical accessibility, the university is launching an initiative to ensure that all digital content, resources and technology meet accessibility standards by April 24, 2026, in compliance with Policy 909: Digital Accessibility and federal regulations.
Digital content includes, but is not limited to, email, websites, mobile apps, media, learning management systems and standard electronic documents (e.g., PDFs, Word, PowerPoint).
The DART Initiative
App State's Digital Accessibility Resources and Training (DART) initiative began planning in spring 2024. The initiative is a collaborative effort led by Information Technology Services (ITS), the Office of Access and Opportunity and University Communications (UComm). This team has been working with key campus stakeholders to promote the initiative, gather feedback and answer initial questions.
With the recent launch of the DART page on App State’s Accessibility website, the university now has a central hub for tools, training and guidance to help faculty and staff with this crucial work.
Creating accessible digital content benefits everyone, not just those with disabilities. Your help ensures all individuals can access, navigate and interact with our digital environments.
How to Get Started
Everyone has a role to play in this important work. We recognize that this will require thoughtful planning, especially for faculty and staff who manage a large volume of digital content.
Start by visiting the DART page to learn more about:
- Roles and responsibilities
- Resources and support
- Federal regulations, including Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA standards
This webpage will be updated regularly as the team continues its campus-wide conversations and adds new details, resources and support.
Share your feedback
Please submit your questions using the Digital Accessibility Resources and Training (DART) Questions form by Friday, Sept. 12. This information will help us identify additional training and resource needs.
Federal Regulations
In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice issued new regulations requiring public entities, including universities, to ensure that all digital content is accessible to individuals with disabilities under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
The new regulations require compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA by April 24, 2026.
University Policy 909: Digital Accessibility was created in accordance with these federal regulations to provide a full description of institutional requirements.
At App State, this work is about more than compliance; it is about our shared commitment to student success. Thank you for helping make our university more accessible and welcoming for all.
